42 JOHNSON STREET, VICTORIA, B.C.
The atlff gale which (broDgh the hours
of last night rattled the windows in Victoria and played a dismal acoompanimcnt on the street signs caused not a few to think of last Friday's storm in which the stoamor Voles went down and five lives were abruptly Urmlnated. Little additional news ii to be told in regard to that diaaater. No other bodies have been recovered, and tho salving of the wreck advances without incident. Mr. Charlea Williams has tho name-board and a portion of tho bow of tho lost steamer, which ho will keep aa a aouvenir of the disaster of March 22.
Tho Boarch for the bjdics was continued yesterday, many friends of tho loat men lending their services. Mr. Adams' aona have oirerod a reward of $100 for the recovery cf his body, but do not: expect that it will bo found for several (I lys at least. They desiro to correct the published report that their father had a largo sum of money on hia peraon at tho time of the disaster. He had about $70 in all on leaving home, and aa ho made several purchases boforo taking tho steamer, tho ojntents of hia pocket book could nob have been much more tliau $50 or SCO at tho most.
Public sympathy for Mrs. Law ond her bereaved little ones in their deep efUiction finds ready and hearty expression. A number of truly charitable ladies of Viotoria have already taken in hand the arrangements for a benefit ooBoert for tbe family ao tragically bereft of their breadwinner and brought face to fioe with porerty; the entertainment will be given aome evening next week in the A.O U. W. hall, and it la aafe to say will be largely patronized.
Another kindly and ganerona aob la that of tho sergeanta of the B. C. B G. A. who have decided to present to Mra. Law the proceeds of their entertaimnenton the evening cf April 2. Tbe public should—and will—show their appreciation and at the same time help out tho good work by attending in largo numbers at tho drill hall on the night of tho entertainment. Tbe programme Is announced as below :
Overture Band of thoBattilion
Physical drill Bword Drill
Pi niborton dumbbell drill.. By School Oblldron
Selection Bana of the Battalion
Sparring Bxhibition. Jiteld QuB Utill.
SinKloatlcka Bayonet Exercise
Fancr Marching. Camp Sceno.
Subscriptions to the relief fund have already begun to ccme in, and it is hoped that at least $50 will be In hand by to-night. This ia a very tnodeat figure and surely it can bo reached in a day. If the children, who aro always ready to help, will contribute but five cents apiece, what a large sum would result and how much it would help those three other little ones who have no father to provide for them 1
One sympathetic Victorian who ia ready to help sendE tho Colonist tho following noto :
" I lost thia morning (Wednesday) a red leather purse containing a $5- gold coin, somewhere on Humboldt street betneon Park road and Govern-menb streeb.
